Fallkniven F1

Knife Collectors Org. Review:

The Fallkniven F1 is one of the most recommended knives among the knife community to be a “woods knife”, as well as a benchmark for a bushcraft knife. Its compact length blade length of 3.8″ means that this knife is small (and light) enough to be taken on a day hike or a backpacking trip. Like the other outdoor knives from Fallkniven, the F1 also features a full tang with a laminated steel blade, which provides flexibility of an outer 420J2 steel backed by the hardness of an inner VG-10 steel. It also has a grippy thermorun handle and an exposed tang at the butt of the knife for hammering. The blade shape is also slightly curved, and this helps when trying to convex sharpen, especially for novices. It is most often compared with the RAT RC-4 knife and Bark River Gunny.

Yet despite all its positive attributes, one of the limitations of the F1 is that its blade length may be a little too short. Some prefer the larger Fallkniven S1 because of its longer 5″ blade and a slightly more tactical bowie look, as compared to the F1. The short blade length of the F1 means that it cannot be used as a chopper, though it can handle batoning tasks.

Overall, the Fallkniven F1 is arguably one of the best knives to have for the outdoors. Though it may not handle chopping tasks that well, it certainly excels at smaller and more delicate tasks, like whittling or cleaning fish, and can baton too. Without a doubt it is a highly recommended knife to be taken out on a hike or a camping trip, and is also a good knife for those looking to get a knife to use.

Rarity Index: 2.5/10 (10 being the most rare)

Rarity index scale (1 to 10, 10 being the most rare):

1 – Very common; easily available on ebay, google product search and almost every knife selling website. Spammed with at least 10+ listings on ebay.
3 – Has been around for at least 2 years and are selling reasonably well, with retailers favouring other newer models over this knife.
5 – Knives that are on the borderline of being discontinued or have been discontinued for less than 6 months
6 – Products from 6 onwards are either discontinued or limited edition.
7 – Discontinued knives that pop up once every few months on the “For Sale” part of forums or on ebay. Still can be found at a few online shops though.
8 – Knives that need lots of researching to find. Not available anymore in online knife shops and pop up (if you’re lucky) >4 months for one at a time.
9 – Knives holding this rarity are the shadowy kind. You can’t find any information on them at all (not even from online knife shops that have not taken down that knife’s product page). If you see one for sale grab at all cost.
10 – The rarest of all knives. If you hadn’t been here you wouldn’t even have known that it existed. Should you have one of these you better lock it up in a triple-combination safe and treat it like a family heirloom…

Product Description:

With this knife a new world standard is being set! Important factors such as technical design, ergonomy and economy are brought together within the model F1, and represent the foremost concept available today. The knife meets and surpasses by far established international standards for strength, personal security and value for money.

Mod. F1 is the official survival knife for pilots within the Swedish Air Force since 1995.

Mod. F1 represents an entirely new philosophy with respect to knives for survival use. At the same time it combines the experience of generations of knife manufacturing with modern technology. The handy size, the well thought-out design, the incredibly tough laminated steel are only a few of many details making this knife something you can rely on.

Mod. F1 is a handy knife and is tremendously versatile. The safe, pleasant grip together with a very hard yet tough laminated steel, makes the knife very useful for all kind of daily work but also demanding tasks. You can choose from two kinds of sheaths –  an all-covering pouch type, which safely houses the entire knife or an extremely tough double-safety, one hand operated zytel sheath.
