ESEE Izula

Knife Collectors Org. Review:

Named after a tough ant hailing from the jungles of Peru, the EESE/Rat Cutlery Izula is a small yet hardy knife that has a great design, with being used as a survival tool as one of its concepts. There have been videos and pictures of owners putting their Izulas to hard use, among them batoning 3″ branches, shaving wood blocks and other tough tasks that the Izula handles with ease.

The EESE Izula stands out when compared to other knives, especially in the area of outdoor tasks. Knives in its same class in which the Izula is most often compared to are the Bark River Bravo Necker and the Becker Necker. Though it may lose out to the BR Bravo Necker in terms of being made of carbon steel and not having a convex edge, the unconditional warranty and lower price are the strong points of the Izula. The Becker Necker comes close but loses out because the bottle opener end of the knife is not as comfortable as the Izula.

However, some of the main concerns of the Izula is the use of 1095 Carbon Steel. This steel is best known for its toughness, ease of sharpening and edge retention. But being carbon steel, it is still quite prone to rusting if not taken care of after use, and is perhaps the only downside to this knife. For this reason ESEE Knives puts a disclaimer in its brochure. To counter this, regular use, sharpening and proper knife maintenance is the only way to prevent rust.

Overall, the EESE/RAT Izula is an excellent knife that proves to perform way above expectation. It functions well as a neck knife and a small backup that can be used for a wide variety of tasks. Given its affordability, toughness and backing of a “no-questions” warranty, the Izula is an excellent choice. A version with a longer handle and additional scales is now available (Izula 2).

Rarity Index: 3/10 (10 being the most rare)

Rarity index scale (1 to 10, 10 being the most rare):

1 – Very common; easily available on ebay, google product search and almost every knife selling website. Spammed with at least 10+ listings on ebay.
3 – Has been around for at least 2 years and are selling reasonably well, with retailers favouring other newer models over this knife.
5 – Knives that are on the borderline of being discontinued or have been discontinued for less than 6 months
6 – Products from 6 onwards are either discontinued or limited edition.
7 – Discontinued knives that pop up once every few months on the “For Sale” part of forums or on ebay. Still can be found at a few online shops though.
8 – Knives that need lots of researching to find. Not available anymore in online knife shops and pop up (if you’re lucky) >4 months for one at a time.
9 – Knives holding this rarity are the shadowy kind. You can’t find any information on them at all (not even from online knife shops that have not taken down that knife’s product page). If you see one for sale grab at all cost.
10 – The rarest of all knives. If you hadn’t been here you wouldn’t even have known that it existed. Should you have one of these you better lock it up in a triple-combination safe and treat it like a family heirloom…

Product Description:

The locals in Peru call the meanest, nastiest ant of the jungle by the name “Isula”. We know it as the Bullet Ant. The Bullet Ant is known to be independent, tough, light on its feet, and a real aggressive survivor – the IZULA knife is built the same way. This knife is designed to be the perfect lightweight survival kit or concealed carry knife.
